With free agency right around the corner, the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to be active, although as one NHL insider reveals, the Leafs have had to pivot.
This summer is going to be an important one for the
Toronto Maple Leafs, who are currently in desperate need to improve their bottom-six, as well as their offensive blueline.
Laying out these needs makes it seem like the Leafs need to be greedy this Summer, but that is not necessarily the case. They just need to be strategic.
Toronto Maple Leafs offseason strategy
For the most part, the belief has been that the Toronto Maple Leafs will be heavily pursuing players in free agency. According to David Pagnotta, appearing on 'Leafs Morning Take,' that is not actually the case.
Instead, it would appear as though the Maple Leafs are trying to focus their efforts on making trades. This means general manager Brad Treliving will be particularly busy at the NHL Draft.
The Maple Leafs are more active exploring options on the trade market than free agency
The big issue with this strategy is the fact that the Maple Leafs pretty much have no assets to trade. Their draft capital is low, and the pickings are slim.
If the Leafs wanted to make a trade, they would likely be getting worse than better, as it would take roster players to get something done.
Quite frankly, this latest report from Pagnotta should scare Leafs fans a little bit. This is by no means good news for the franchise.
Hopefully, the Leafs can find a balanced approach for free agency and the offseason that can allow them to fill all the holes they need to.
