Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is going to have to make some tough decisions in free agency, and Nick Kypreos thinks a buyout is coming.

When July 1st hits, the Toronto Maple Leafs will look to sign the best players available, at the best prices available. Unfortunately, that is easier said than done.
Regardless, the Leafs have some players they want to add. Whether that be Brad Marchand or Aaron Ekblad, general manager Brad Treliving has some options.
On the flip side of that, the Leafs also have some guys that they would probably prefer to get rid of, for a number of reasons, including lack of production.

Brad Treliving's next move for the Toronto Maple Leafs

One player who has been speculated on is none other than fourth-liner David Kampf, who was a frequent healthy scratch this season. He had 13 points in 59 games and was frequently dismissed for his lackluster production.
While it was previously reported that a trade was likelier than a buyout, Nick Kypreos does not believe that to be the case. On 'Leafs Morning Take,' he claimed that a Kampf buyout could be an inevitability.
I think there's some options, whatever happens with David Kampf, I think that's an option for a buyout. Scott Laughton came in and took his spot, and buyouts are an option and I'd start with David Kampf.

There are still two seasons left on Kampf's deal. Although at this point, it seems pretty clear that he just isn't cutting it with the team.
His cap hit is fairly low thanks to a recent bonus payment, and if the team were to buy him out, they would save $700K per season for two seasons. Eventually, it would cost them dearly for the two seasons after that.
Regardless, this is a road the Leafs can go down should they find out that Kampf isn't particularly tradeable. At this point, teams will just wait for him to be bought out before signing him and losing assets.
Hopefully, for the Leafs, they can figure something out and make the most of what should be a hectic summer.
