JJ Peterka was recently traded from the Buffalo Sabres to the Utah Mammoth, although the Toronto Maple Leafs tried their best to get involved.
When the Buffalo Sabres traded
JJ Peterka, there were some jealous Toronto Maple Leafs fans out there and for good reason.
The forward had 27 goals and 68 points last season on a bad team. He plays on the right win, which would have made him the perfect replacement for
Mitch Marner.
Instead,
the Utah Mammoth got him, which was tragic for all of the Leafs fans out there. Not to mention, the Mammoth didn't pay a particularly heavy price.
The Toronto Maple Leafs wanted JJ Peterka
According to Frank Seravalli, the Maple Leafs were interested in Peterka. However, the Sabres wanted
Brandon Carlo in return.
It was well known that the Sabres needed a right-shot defenseman, and Carlo was the perfect player for that role. However, the Leafs did not feel comfortable giving that up.
The Maple Leafs I believe tried to chase down JJ Peterka in Buffalo, that's where the Brandon Carlo connection came in as Buffalo was looking for a right shot defensemen
The Leafs like their current defensive core, and they don't want to put the team in a bad position for absolutely no reason.
Quite frankly, it is easy to see why general manager Brad Treliving would feel this way. Toronto has a good formula, and they can't afford to lose more roster guys.
As for Peterka, only time will tell whether or not he grows into a superstar with the Mammoth.
