Jake Evans is a center for the Canadiens who the Leafs have been eyeing for quite some time, and for good reason.
He is a player who could inject some offense into the lineup and would be perfectly placed on the team's third line, which has had some up and down moments throughout the season.
According to Hockey Patrol, the baseline deal to acquire Evans must contain a second-round pick, and a valuable one at that.
The Maple Leafs have a second-round pick via the Florida Panthers but it will be fairly low on the totem pole due to the Florida's regular season success.
Having said that, the Leafs do have other assets they can trade, including prospects like Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan.
While these guys are phenomenal young talents, general manager Brad Treliving may have no choice but to give them up considering the fact that the Canadiens are getting a ton of trade calls for Evans.
Pierre LeBrun of TSN also made sure to mention that the Habs will keep Evans if they cannot get a good deal for him.
Needless to say, the Habs are playing hardball with the league and that is especially true when dealing with their rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs.
For now, Brayden Schenn remains the top target for the Leafs, although Evans could be a solid contingency plan.
If one thing is for certain, this is going to be a very long and busy week around the National Hockey League.
