Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been struggling to start the season, and according to Chris Johnston, something deeper is happening.

Last season, Auston Matthews struggled to put pucks in the net as he was suffering from some sort of injury that was not disclosed to the media.
Going into this season, it was reported that the Maple Leafs captain was fully healthy and that he could be on track to get back to his form from a couple of years ago.
However, the season is 11 games deep, and the captain is facing similar struggles. He has eight points in 11 games and has only five goals.

Auston Matthews is struggling

According to a report from Chris Johnston, the captain is not injured, so that cannot be used as an excuse. He is physically capable of scoring goals.
Instead, the issue runs deeper and the Maple Leafs must come away with a solution before this continues to get worse.
Despite not scoring at his usual pace to start the season, there are no injury concerns with Matthews. This isn't a repeat of last season when he couldn't physically execute - it's more about finding ways to get him the puck in better scoring areas.
One of the big problems right now is the fact that Mitch Marner is not on the team, which has ruined the continuity on the first line.
The Maple Leafs have been rotating players on the first line, and unfortunately, this has not worked out for the Leafs so far.
Matthews isn't even playing with Matthew Knies anymore, which just goes to show that the Leafs have fallen off the deep end in terms of the lineup.
At a record of 5-5-1, the Maple Leafs need to kick things into gear, and if they don't, then this season could get out of hand.
