John Tavares Contract Negotiations with the Toronto Maple Leafs Finally Get a Positive Update

The Toronto Maple Leafs and forward John Tavares are currently in the midst of contract negotiations that have proven to be frustrating for all sides.
John Tavares had himself a sensational season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2024-25, although he fell short in the postseason with yet another signature choke job.
Regardless, 38 goals and 74 points are enough to get you a pretty solid contract. Unfortunately, for the Leafs, Tavares now wants a lot more than they are willing to pay him.
Over the last few weeks, there have been numerous reports about how both sides are far apart. Tavares thinks he can get $8 million per season elsewhere, while the Leafs won't pay him more than an AAV of $4 million.

Interestingly enough, it isn't actually all doom and gloom these days. A new report from Chris Johnston suggests that we could still see a deal get done between both sides, fairly soon.
As Johnston reports, the Maple Leafs and Tavares have common ground. If the Leafs just offer a contract similar to Chris Tanev's then we will see this get done.

Moving forward, Tavares and the Leafs will have to remain cordial in order to get something done in a timely and reasonable manner.
Mudslinging or leaking information to the press is not going to get anyone anywhere. Both sides contain adults, and we just hope that everyone acts accordingly.
Tavares would be a hard guy to replace, and it would be a bad look for general manager Brad Treliving to lose him just days after losing Mitch Marner.
Hopefully, everyone here does the right thing, and Tavares gets to come back to the franchise that he loves and adores so dearly.
