Toronto Maple Leafs Reporter Reveals Insane Salary John Tavares Could Get on the Open Market

Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares has yet to sign a new extension with the Leafs, and with free agency on the horizon, the clock is ticking fast.
John Tavares had 38 goals last season and added another 36 assists to bring him to a total of 74 points. Overall, this was a solid campaign, especially considering how the forward is 34 years old.
However, because of his incredible season, the forward is trying to squeeze the Toronto Maple Leafs for more money in free agency.
According to current reports, the Leafs offered Tavares a three-year deal worth less than $4 million per season. Some will say this is way too low, while others believe the former captain should take it if he really wants to stay.

Recently, James Mirtle was on the JD Bunkis Podcastodcast, where he spoke about numerous topics pertaining to the Leafs, and of course, Tavares was brought up.
It was here where he revealed that if he were to explore free agency, there are some teams willing to pay him $8 million per season.
- Still thinks the Leafs can get Tavares done, but it's been harder than expected (as Tavares could get $8M in UFA given the C market)
- Still thinks they probably end up at the Tanev contract
- Would be really surprised if Knies gets done before July 1st
- The Leafs might have to sit on their cap space, wait out the market, and pounce if another Mason Marchment pops up
- It's more possible the Leafs move a D now, considering their lack of assets (Carlo has no trade protection at a reasonable number)
- Still thinks they probably end up at the Tanev contract

If the Leafs won't even pay him half that, we could see an official divorce between both sides. While some fans will be disappointed, it shouldn't come as that much of a surprise.
General Manager Brad Treliving wants to change the DNA of this team, and for too long, Tavares has been part of a losing DNA.
While it would sting to have to replace him in the same summer you lose Mitch Marner, the Leafs are just trying to be practical.
Having said that, Mirtle still thinks both sides can get something done. Whether or not they do, remains to be seen.
