The Toronto Maple Leafs have just done something special for forward John Tavares and now, John Tavares is speaking up about it in the only way he knows how.
John Tavares has been having a fantastic season with the Toronto Maple Leafs as he has 37 goals.
This is well above what people thought was possible especially when you consider the forward's age and the fact that people expected a steep decline.
In a report from Nick Barden of The Hockey News, Tavares spoke about being nominated for the award and his mentality when it comes to the game.
"I really enjoy what I'm doing. I feel like it's an amazing opportunity to do something you first fell in love with as a kid. I kind of just feel like a kid every day, and getting to play a sport and a game that I love and I've been doing my whole life, and to get to do it in a tremendous place, where I'm from, all those sorts of things. Every day is really exciting, and you can't beat it."
Furthermore, Tavares addressed giving up the captaincy to Auston Matthews and how that has affected his game.
Simply put, he is still the same player regardless of what letter is on the heart of his jersey.
"I never looked at it as something that was going to change my approach or how I lead or how I play and how I expect to come in and the level that I need to play at and just your dedication, work ethic, I think my enjoyment and passion for the game."
"I just took it head on, really believed it was the right thing to do. I didn't worry about what people were saying or what opinions that were going on, just try to do the right thing and go about my business that I always have, and I expect myself to be at a very high level and help contribute."
Overall, Tavares is a sensational player and Leafs fans are very lucky to have him.
Hopefully, he is able to win that Masterton award. The hockey world knows he is deserving.
