Kirill Kaprizov Has Just Created a Major Problem for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Minnesota Wild superstar Kirill Kaprizov is seeking a new contract, and the price is reportedly about to be so high that it could have a ripple effect on the NHL.
Kirill Kaprizov has been one of the best players in the NHL over the past few years, and in 2026, he is going to be paid like it.
Just like Connor McDavid, he is set to become a free agent in 2026, which means he is eligible for a contract right now. With McDavid showing hesitance in negotiating a contract, it appears as though Kaprizov is more likely to sign first.
This means Kaprizov has an opportunity to set the market for 2026, and become the highest-paid player in the history of the National Hockey League.

According to reporter Michael Russo, the Wild are prepared to give Kaprizov an eight-year deal worth a total of $128 million.
Both sides need to work out some specifics first, but it is looking like a deal should be done rather soon, as $128 million is hard to turn down.

If Kaprizov does make $16 million per season, then the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to have a problem on their hands in a few years with Auston Matthews.
Should Matthews get back to the 60-goal production we know him for, then the forward is going to find himself demanding a hefty salary.
With the salary cap going up, Matthews' next deal could even reach the $18 million mark. It just goes to show that teams are going to have to be smart about their salary cap allotments going forward.
If one thing is for certain, it is that Brad Treliving has his work cut out for him.
