Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is due for a new contract, although, based on new reporting, free agency in 2026 might be a true frenzy.
Next summer, McDavid will become a free agent, unless, of course, he signs a contract extension with the Oilers. Negotiations are supposed to begin soon, but recent comments suggest he's in no rush.
Connor McDavid is not signing with the Edmonton Oilers anytime soon
Various reporters and insiders have been weighing in on the McDavid situation, and every single day, something new comes to light.
For instance, John Shannon of '100% Hockey' recently said that McDavid won't be signing a new deal before the start of the season. This contradicts previous reporting that said it would be done sometime in September.
I think there's people in the Oilers office holding their breath; Connor's in no hurry; he's going to go into the regular season without a new contract
If you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, this is very good news, as McDavid could very well become a free agent in 2026.
By this point, the Maple Leafs would have more than enough cap space to pay the $17 million salary that McDavid would likely command.
Of course, the entire league would be gunning for him, which would make it tough for the Leafs to stand out. Whatever the case may be, things are getting interesting.
As for the Oilers, they are going to need to prove to McDavid that they are real contenders for a title, and that might be more difficult than they think.
