Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies just lost a linemate in Mitch Marner, although his latest comments suggest he's not too beat up about it.
Matthew Knies is locked in for the next six seasons in Toronto, and the fans are excited to see how he is going to develop as a player and if he will be able to improve upon his 29 goals from last season.
During the 2024-25 season, Knies played on the top line with
Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. However, Marner is now gone, which means Knies is about to get a new linemate.
Matthew Knies on Mitch Marner
According to Arun Srinivasan, Knies told reporters that he thinks the team has made some great moves and has already added a lot to the roster.
Furthermore, he explicitly said he thinks the team is going to be stronger. If that isn't some shade, we don't know what is.
I wasn't the happiest to see that he's leaving but I think we made some great moves, some great additions. I think we're going to be stronger. I think we're going to have a great team. You're not excited to see one of your captains, one of your veteran players on another team, but that's the business of the game. I think we're going to make some strong moves, and I have full faith in Tre and Berube to create a winning team.
Whether or not the Maple Leafs do, actually, get any stronger, still remains to be seen. However, it is clear that general manager Brad Treliving is trying.
It's cool to see Knies acknowledge the GM, as well as head coach Craig Berube. He has a lot of respect for his peers, and that shines through in his comments.
The upcoming season might be difficult without Marner at first, but this could be the start of a huge culture shift that is better in the long run.
