Elliotte Friedman's report about the Toronto Maple Leafs potentially accusing the Las Vegas Golden Knights of tampering could have major implications for Mitch Marner.

This morning, Elliotte Friedman dropped a new episode of '32 Thoughts' in which he revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs are seemingly prepared to accuse the Las Vegas Golden Knights of tampering.
Why? Well, it's not even July 1st yet, and there is this feeling that Mitch Marner has already made up his mind. However, there is no concrete evidence to suggest this. Instead, fans and rival GMs are purely acting based on instincts and "vibes."
Friedman went on to say that if the Leafs were to complete a sign-and-trade with the Golden Knights, they would forget this ever happened. But if a deal doesn't get done, then they will go to the NHL. Friedman chose his words extremely carefully and said that this was just a rumbling, not a concrete fact. Regardless, the news sent shockwaves around social media.

What are the NHL penalties for tampering?

In fact, Puck Report on X reminded fans of what the penalties are when teams and players are found guilty of tampering.
The teams can face a $5 million fine, a termination of the contract they signed, the forfeiture of draft picks, as well as paying restitution to the team they caused harm. In this case, the Golden Knights would theoretically have to give the Leafs draft picks and money.
As for Mitch Marner, he could face a $1 million fine, as well as either a suspension or an outright expulsion.
Friedman says the vibe around the league is that the NHL is "itching" to make an example out of a team and a player. However, there is no reason for them to do so just yet.
As we have made it clear, the Leafs have not accused the Golden Knights of tampering. Friedman simply reported that it is a possibility, and that as it stands, there is no real evidence to suggest the Knights and Marner did something wrong.
But should things go wrong, it is important to remember what is at stake. Careers can be ruined, and teams could be brought under.
Only time will tell how this shapes out, and whether or not a sign-and-trade occurs before July 1st.
