Mitch Marner is Allegedly Leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs Because He Didn't Get the Captaincy

Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner is likely on his way out of Toronto, and Auston Matthews' captaincy may have just been a huge factor in that.
Mitch Marner and the Leafs are headed towards a very messy divorce. One could even make the argument that the split is already messy.
Why is Mitch Marner leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs?
According to Dave Feschuk, Marner's camp, his father, in particular, is upset that he was not considered for the role of captain.
Of course, Auston Matthews took over for
John Tavares, which made a lot of sense. However, as it turns out, Marner wanted the gig.
There have been multiple expressions of a feeling of lack of respect from the Marner camp over his time in Toronto. We saw his dad talk about it at some point, why isn't he considered for the captaincy. We know that there has been a lot of back and forth with management about 'why did Auston Matthews get this and why didn't I get this' - and all good arguments... There is a certain aspect of his camp and the way he has carried himself that says he hasn't had quite enough alpha dog treatment and this is his moment to get it.
This is a pretty absurd demand from Marner, who hasn't shown an inkling of leadership since joining the Toronto Maple Leafs a decade ago.
His playoff performances in big games are dreadful, and it is hard to imagine him commanding a room or getting guys to seriously listen to him in tense moments.
If and when Marner leaves, it's hard to imagine another team naming him the captain, unless he goes to a young franchise like the Anaheim Ducks.
Either way, this just proves that these two need to move on from one another. It's just too toxic, and everyone would be better off with a fresh start.
