Mitch Marner Slapped with a Harsh Reality Ahead of Free Agency

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is in line for a new contract this summer; however, on radio host believes free agency might be tougher than Marner thought.
However, TSN 1050's Bryan Hayes isn't buying that figure. In fact, he has a much more cynical view of Marner's negotiations, and he thinks the forward is in for a harsh reality.
How much will Mitch Marner sign for in Free Agency?
As Hayes explained on the radio, Marner is a great player, but he isn't better than
Mikko Rantanen. Rantanen is getting paid $12.5 million per season, and Hayes doesn't believe Marner would get one dime above that.
Consequently, the Leafs forward may just realize he would be better off stayin in Toronto, where he would remain comfortable and get the same type of money.
It also could be about getting the most money, period. And there's a chance that he gets out there and the rest of the League goes, 'I'm not paying you a penny more than Rantanen. You have $12 million, that's it.' Maybe the Leafs offered him $13 million. Maybe he snaps back and goes, 'Wait a minute, with the Leafs I could make the most money, I could make the most money if they still want me at the reported price tag they were kicking around!'
If you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan who likes Mitch Marner, then this is going to be some nice wishful thinking. However, there is an 80 percent chance the forward walks.
At the end of the day, the Maple Leafs are a very good team, but they would certainly take a step back if Marner were to walk away.
This is what makes the NHL such a difficult league. You can try your best to bring in top-tier players, but they can always leave when their contracts are up.
The Maple Leafs front office is going to have its work cut out for it trying to clean up this incoming mess.
