Mikko Rantanen was traded to the Dallas Stars on Friday in one of the most eventful trade deadlines in the history of the National Hockey League.
Mikko Rantanen was always leaving the Carolina Hurricanes
In a new interview, Hurricanes general manager Rod Brind'Amour admitted that Rantanen had told the team he was never going to sign with them.
This put the franchise in a bad spot and it's why they traded the forward as soon as they got the chance.
«When [Rantanen] showed up, he said, 'There's four teams I'll go play for, and you're not one of them.' And the question is, should we have known that before we signed him?»
Necas said something similar a couple of days ago to Colorado media. «It's a tough position for them, they probably should've known that he would sign in Carolina if he gets there.»
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Mikko Rantanen was willing to sign with four different teams.
Of course, one of them was the Dallas Stars, but the others were the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Florida Panthers, and the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Brind'Amour revealed there were 4 teams Rantanen said he'd «play for.» Dallas was clearly one. I believe Florida and Vegas were two others. That leaves one more.
Ultimately, this is one of those situations where you can't help but think about what could have been.
Only time will tell if this is a trade that works out for the Dallas Stars.
