There has been a lack of big trades in the NHL as of late, and reporter Bryan Hayes has a method to bring trades back to the league in huge numbers.
If you are a hockey fan, you have probably noticed the lack of trades in recent history. It almost feels like teams are scared to make big moves.
Overall, fans have been wanting this to change. They have been hoping for general managers to get a lot more bold with their moves.
Bryan Hayes has an idea for the NHL
Athletic reporter Jonas Siegel was recently on TSN 1050, where he posed the question about why there aren't more trades in the league.
Do you guys ever wish there was more player movement in the NHL?
Bryan Hayes subsequently replied with the perfect explanation. Simply, it has to do with the fact that there are too many no-trade clauses.
Sure, I mean for the nature of our business, it's always way more compelling when you get crazy trades and more movement, but it's on the players in order to push for that... I think the way around it is get rid of no movement clauses. Get rid of no trade clauses. That's what stops trades. Teams would trade players in a heartbeat -- it's the players that don't allow it.

If the no-trade clause were removed, then there would certainly be way more trades. The Toronto Maple Leafs are prime examples of this.
At the end of the day, the no-trade clause is here to stay, especially in the midst of the most recent collective bargaining agreement. Maybe some day, that will change.
