Nikolaj Ehlers had numerous teams on the edge of their seats, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, who reportedly had interest in the winger in free agency.
However, it was becoming clearer and clearer over the past couple of days that the forward would either be going to the Washington Capitals or the Carolina Hurricanes.
Today, Ehlers made his decision official, as he signed a six-year, $8.5 million AAV deal with the Hurricanes. Now, he will be one of their blue-chip players for years to come.
When free agency opened up on July 1st on Tuesday, it was expected that Ehlers was going to take his time with his decision. However, most figured a decision would come yesterday.
Instead, Ehlers took a full extra day to come to a decision, and we only found out what he wanted to do mere minutes ago.
Ultimately, this is fine by the Carolina Hurricanes, who now get a solid winger who actually wants to play for their franchise, unlike
Mikko Rantanen.
What next in free agency?
There aren't too many big-name free agents left right now, which is bad news for teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are still looking to get better.
At the end of the day, the team is going to have to do some soul searching and perhaps go after some trades.
Only time will tell what Treliving decides to do to improve this team. Although they most certainly did not expect to get Ehlers.
Either way, we will continue to keep you updates on all things Maple Leafs.
