Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares has expressed a desire to return to the franchise, and with free agency coming up, a contract must be negotiated soon.
John Tavares is a player who dreamt of playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs when he was a kid, and he eventually got to realize that dream.
However, over the years, he has not been able to see much playoff success with the franchise. A loss in Game 7 to the Florida Panthers on Sunday was yet another example of this.
With his contract expiring, there has been a lot of talk about whether or not Tavares would return to the Leafs next season and beyond.
Is John Tavares signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs?
Now, according to The Fourth Period, Tavares and the Leafs are gearing up to start negotiating in early June. Furthermore, there is a sense that a two-year or a three-year deal is probably in the cards.
Contract talks between the Leafs and John Tavares' camp, led by agent Pat Brisson, are expected to resume by early June, with a two-or three-year extension likely to be the main focus.
The money is unknown right now, however, Tavares kept his value high with an amazing regular season. At 34 years old, he had 74 points in 75 games.
However, his playoff production saw a steep drop-off as he only had seven points in 13 games. This is par for the course with Tavares in the playoffs.
Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs keep Tavares or if they decide to move on. A similar decision must be made with
Mitch Marner.
If there is one thing for certain here, it is that the Leafs are in the midst of an incredibly difficult offseason.
