Is Mitch Marner leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs?
A new report from Jonas Siegel suggests that the Leafs never really cared about how the playoffs went. From the start of the regular season, the team wanted to sign Marner to a huge contract.
In fact, the Leafs offered a contract extension that would have made the forward the highest-paid player in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise. However, Marner opted to refuse.
The Leafs attempted to sign Mitch Marner to a contract extension during the season. The organization chose not to wait and see how the postseason played out.
They wanted Marner to stay. If they had signed him to an eight-year deal, it would have marked the largest contract in franchise history.
He declined.
For a lot of people, this is absolutely shocking. However, other fans could see the writing on the wall.
Given the lack of playoff success, it is probably for the best that Mitch Marner does not return. That said, it is fascinating that the Leafs were willing to overlook that and pay Marner more than
Auston Matthews.
With July 1st coming up, it will be interesting to see what happens next with the forward and whether or not he is truly done in the city.
Based on his recent comments, we imagine he is absolutely on his way out.
