Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nick Robertson signed a contract extension today, and as you can imagine, not everyone is a fan of the salary he received.

Nick Robertson is a player who has been somewhat controversial within the Maple Leafs fanbase, given his history with contracts.
Last season, he never really seemed to fit in and was a frequent healthy scratch, especially during the playoffs. It just felt like he never had the trust of his head coach.
Since that time, the Maple Leafs have been negotiating a contract extension, and things were even going to take a serious turn on Sunday with an arbitration hearing.
Luckily, both sides were able to come to an agreement before arbitration was even necessary. Today, Robertson signed a one-year deal worth $1.85 million.

Toronto Maple Leafs re-sign Nick Robertson

Overall, this is a hefty contract, but for the Leafs, going with just one year was always the way to go, and that is why the price was higher.
As David Alter of The Hockey News explains, both sides were happy with making this a one-year affair.
Nick Robertson's deal is a one-year contract. The Leafs could've pushed for two years in arbitration to keep more control, but leaning toward the higher AAV on a one-year deal gives Robertson another chance to bet on himself.
Based on this, it seems as though Robertson will be on the roster come opening night. However, he could be traded fast.
If things are not going well by the time the trade deadline comes along, then we might just see the inevitable happen.
Only time will tell whether or not Nick Robertson can prove to the rest of the league that he truly is the player the Maple Leafs hoped he would be.
