Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies is up for a hefty contract this summer, and with free agency coming up, fans are getting a bit anxious about the situation.
Overall, the forward is a future star, and if
Mitch Marner really does leave, some think Knies could be bumped up to Core Four status.
Knies has stated that he has no interest in an offer sheet, although if the offer is good enough, he may just change his mind.
How much will Matthew Knies make with the Toronto Maple Leafs?
According to Nick Barden of
The Hockey News, there is some good news to report as it pertains to Knies. Essentially, his contract won't cost as much as some fans have been fearing.
When the offseason began, there were reports that Knies could get a contract worth $9 million per season. Although, as Barden reports, it's more likely that Knies signs for closer to $7.25 million per season.
As for the term of the deal, something more long-term seems feasible. Seven years could be the move here for both sides. This means the total value of the contract would be north of $50 million.
After watching Matthew Knies this season, it is very clear to us and many others that the forward is more than deserving of a big contract.
However, fans are really keen on getting this done as quickly as possible. Anything past July 1st is going to start raising a ton of red flags, and there will be shades of Mitch Marner.
Having said that, Knies seems like he wants to be a Leaf for a very long time, and we would love to see that come to fruition.
This is a storyline that we will continue to follow, so be sure to tap in with us for extended coverage.
