With Toronto Maple Leafs development camp opening up on Thursday, the team is trying to go for some experimental coaching that will definitely raise eyebrows.
For those who weren't drafted, this is the time to prove scouts wrong and potentially get yourself either an AHL or ECHL contract for the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, others are simply just trying to get better and potentially get themselves an invite to a development camp in future seasons. Whatever the case may be, it is a mutually beneficial process for player and team.
Toronto Maple Leafs go all out at development camp
As it turns out, the
Maple Leafs are getting a bit wild with their training regimen for these prospects. According to Terry Koshan of The Toronto Sun, the Leafs are bringing in a horse trainer and an actual wild colt.
Hayley Wickenheiser, the team's assistant general manager, noted that no horses will be harmed, and the players will not get on the horse.
#Leafs are bringing in a horse trainer and a wild colt for an exercise for prospects in managing emotions and handling pressure in tricky situations. Wickenheiser: "It's going to be interesting ... the horse will not be on the ice and no one will getting on the horse."
This is supposed to teach emotional regulation, although we are struggling to find out how.
Regardless, the Leafs are trying something new, and this is an experience these young players are never going to forget.
Only time will tell whether or not any of these players make it in the NHL, and continue their hockey careers with the Maple Leafs.
Either way, we wish all of these kids luck, and we hope they can prove their worth to the right coaches and scouts.
