The Toronto Maple Leafs, the Florida Panthers, and the Tampa Bay Lightning are currently in a huge battle for the Atlantic Division title and things are heating up.
This season has been filled with ups and downs for the
Toronto Maple Leafs as they have been struggling to win games against bad teams.
Either way, this has put the team at a bit of a deficit when it comes to winning the Atlantic Division which has become a three-team race with the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning.
Toronto Maple Leafs continue to battle for the Atlantic Division
Today, the Leafs and the Panthers were tied with 87 points although with the Leafs only back in action on Tuesday and Florida playing the Pittsburgh Penguins today, the Leafs were at risk of being knocked down to second.
That is exactly what happened as the Panthers won their game in a shootout by a score of 4-3, thus giving them 89 points.
The Tampa Bay Lightning remain in third with two games in hand on the Panthers and a total of 85 points.
STANDINGS WATCH: The Panthers pick up a shootout win tonight over the Penguins and now move into sole possession of first place, two points ahead of the Leafs with the Leafs having a game in hand.
Reminder: These two teams still have to face each other twice more this season, with the next meeting on April 2.
If you are a Maple Leafs fan, this is definitely not what you want to see and it will be interesting to watch the Leafs try to chip their way back into the lead.
They play the Philadelphia Flyers, the San Jose Sharks, and the Los Angeles Kings over the upcoming week which gives them some good opportunities.
The fans want something to cheer about and getting themselves a Division title would certainly be a good start.
