John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs are working on a contract extension, and there have been a few delays, seeing as though both sides were far apart.

Free agency is going to begin in five days from now, and John Tavares still hasn't been signed to a contract extension. As it turns out, the forward's demands had been pretty lofty.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to get some team-friendly deals, especially from their 34-year-old former captain. Although after a 38-goal season, Tavares feels as though he is worth a lot more than the Leafs are willing to give.
Over the weekend, it was reported that the Leafs had offered Tavares a modest deal at three years and just $4 million per season.

John Tavares contract extension

Some insiders say the former captain will sign a deal worth four years and $5 million per season, Now, Darren Dreger is here with an update that is good news for all parties involved.
As the insider states, both Tavares and the Leafs want to get a deal done very soon. They even feel like it can get done before July 1st, if everyone cooperates accordingly.
The Maple Leafs have been «grinding away» behind the scenes, working to make progress on new contracts for both John Tavares and Matthew Knies.

Negotiations have picked up in recent days, and there's a sense things are moving in the right direction. With Tavares set to become a UFA on July 1st, there's a clear push to get something done - both sides want it, and he's made it known he wants to finish his career in Toronto. There's a sense progress was made today.

Knies' situation is a bit different as an RFA, but Brad Treliving views both players as priorities and is aiming to have clarity before July 1st hits and free agency opens.
John Tavares is going to decline over the coming years, so it is easy to see why the Leafs would want to pay him a lot less than what the forward thinks he's worth.
However, Tavares does have to acknowledge the fact that he is no good in the playoffs, and that is why things are trending the way they are.
Only time will tell whether or not both of these sides can finally get a deal done. If we had to guess, it is going to happen very soon.
The Leafs and Tavares want it to happen, and for everyone's sanity, it is best to get this over with.
