The Toronto Maple Leafs are in desperate need of a puck-moving defenseman, and the Utah Mammoth might just be the key to that issue.
There was a one-month stretch last season in which the Leafs were unable to get a goal from a defenseman. It was pretty bleak, and the team has been in need of some kind of upgrade.
Well, it appears as though the Utah Mammoth has a player who could prove to be a big help. That player is none other than former ninth overall draft pick,
Mikhail Sergachev.
Toronto Maple Leafs want Mikhail Sergachev
According to Howard Berger, the Toronto Maple Leafs are very interested in
Sergachev and have reached out to the Utah Mammoth.
The defenseman makes $8.5million per season, and had 53 points last season. His career high is 64, which was achieved during his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Told the #Leafs have talked to #Utah about defenceman Mikhail Sergachev. Age 27. Cap hit $8.5 million. Full NMC. 53 points last season for the #Mammoth. Creative cap work would be required by #Toronto with only $1.9 million in current space
Making this deal would be tough from a cap space point of view. However, given Sergachev's pedigree as a Stanley Cup winner, it makes sense for him to be on the Leafs' radar.
He has come a long way from his days with the Montreal Canadiens, when he was still just a young defenseman looking to make a name for himself.
The Maple Leafs would love to have him on the roster, and with this report, one has to wonder if Brad Treliving can work some magic.
Sergachev would absolutely be the perfect addition to the team, even if it comes at a major cost.
