Toronto Maple Leafs on the Verge of Losing Two Promising Young Stars

If you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, then you know that the team has struggled over the past few years with its prospect pool.

Of course, when you are finishing well in the standings every year, your draft picks are going to be a reflection of this. Not to mention, the Leafs have traded picks away for roster players as they are in "win now" mode.

Meanwhile, there are a couple of draft picks from the Kyle Dubas era who have been neglected, and as a result, they have been doing their own thing in the NCAA.

Two of those players are defenseman John Fusco and forward Wyatt Schingoethe. Fusco and Schingoethe were taken six picks apart in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

As PuckPedia and Hockey Patrol have pointed out, the Toronto Maple Leafs are at risk of losing both of these players very soon.

Why? Well, it all has to do with the fact that their NHL Draft Rights are set to expire on August 15th, and they have yet to be signed to entry-level deals.

If the Maple Leafs want to keep these players, they are going to have to make a deal sooner rather than later. If they don't, then Fusco and Schingoethe will be free agents.

Fusco played for Dartmouth College last season and was actually quite solid when it came to offense, as he had 11 goals and 10 assists in 32 games.

Meanwhile, Schingoethe's last season with Western Michigan University was a lot less productive. He had just 11 points in 31 games.

At the end of the day, neither of these players will be top priorities for Brad Treliving; however, if he loses them for nothing, then they will be a waste of a draft pick.
