Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is currently looking for a new contract with the team, however, there has yet to be any significant movement on the matter.
There have even been rumors that the star forward wants more money than Auston Matthew which could be problematic for the team.
Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to talk
According to reporter Jonas Siegel of the Athletic, the Maple Leafs are rumored to have two distinct mentalities when it comes to Marner.
There are seen as two plausible and possibly related reasons a deal isn't done yet: either the Leafs aren't willing to meet Marner's asking price, or they want to see how he performs in the postseason before re-committing to him for the long term at a high price tag.
Overall, the latter of these two reasons is perfectly reasonable and should be respected by Mitch, who has not been good in the playoffs.
If the Leafs somehow get close to winning a Stanley Cup, then it goes without saying that the forward's value would jump considerably.
Until then, it just does not make sense for the team to pay him more than someone like
Auston Matthews.
Sure, Mitch Marner might be having a career year with 68 points in 50 games, but that is why they call them career years. They won't happen every single season.
For Marner to get paid like
Leon Draisaitl, he would need to have put up those kinds of numbers consistently, and he hasn't.
No matter what, this is going to be fascinating to watch moving forward.
