Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid is looking to enter contract negotiations with his team, and the Toronto Maple Leafs would love to make an impact.
These negotiations are going to be historic, but if they do not go according to plan, the forward could very well become a free agent come 2026.
Connor McDavid set for an NHL record
Having said that, a new report from Elliotte Friedman is suggesting that when all is said and done, Connor McDavid and
Kirill Kaprizov will be the highest-paid players in the history of the NHL.
This is big news for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who would have to shell out close to $16 to $17.5 million per season to even have McDavid consider the franchise.
Players expect that the two highest salaries after this wave of signings are gonna be McDavid and Kaprizov; once those players sign, I think you'll see...other potential top UFAs [2026] say...it's easier for me to find the sweet spot
Whatever the case may be, Connor McDavid is going to be a huge narrative next season, and we are looking forward to how things play out.
If the Oilers fumble the negotiations, and the Maple Leafs are able to get a foot in the door, then a lot of fans are going to be excited.
Ultimately, there is no telling what is going to happen next, and Maple Leafs fans should probably temper their expectations before getting too excited.
Having said all that, McDavid is a sensational player, and we hope he is able to win a Stanley Cup sometime soon.
