Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has yet to sign a new deal with the team, and according to Elliotte Friedman, something unexpected could be brewing.

Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers are in a very peculiar position right now, as they have yet to negotiate a new contract extension.
McDavid is the best player in the NHL, and he still hasn't won a Stanley Cup. As a result, there are some out there who think the superstar will explore free agency come 2026.
If that happens, every single team in the league will be gunning for him. Given McDavid's talents, you would think his salary would break the bank. As it turns out, this may not be the case.

Connor McDavid's salary won't be as extravagant as you think

According to Elliotte Friedman, Connor McDavid's salary is not going to be as lofty as some might expect. After all, if McDavid wants to win a Cup, he needs to leave his team some cap space.
That means McDavid could end up making between $15 and $16 million per season, as opposed to the $16-$17 million that others were suggesting.
I don't think this number is gonna be a backbreaker...because McDavid knows he can't say I want a championship team around me and then take a number that makes it impossible
This is good news for the Edmonton Oilers, if McDavid decides that he wants to continue playing for the franchise.
Meanwhile, if you're the Toronto Maple Leafs, this is also good news. Why? Well, if McDavid becomes available next Summer, then Brad Treliving won't have to pay an obscene premium.
Over the coming weeks, the McDavid story will continue to be huge around the league, especially as fans have no clue what the forward wants to do.
Based on his recent comments, it really does feel like the end of an era could be coming soon.
