Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is coming off a disappointing season, and in a recent interview, he spoke about the major disappointment of that campaign.
Auston Matthews struggled to score goals last season due to a lingering injury. While we still don't know the nature of this injury, what we do know is that it wouldn't go away.
This season, Matthews is claiming to be healthier than ever. However, there is no telling whether or not that is true, given his slow start to the season.
While he does have four goals in seven games, he could be a lot better right now, and there are certainly some real fears surrounding his game.
Auston Matthews is honest about the Toronto Maple Leafs
In a new interview with
Jonas Siegel, however, the captain is as confident as ever that he can get back to the way he used to play.
I know that the level I was at last year wasn't up to my standard, and whatever the factors are - health, etc. - for myself, I think just the extra motivation (is there) to get back to that level and that standard that I hold myself to. Because I know if I play like that, then the team has success as well. I definitely feel like there's a little extra motivation, especially in stuff like that.
Additionally, the goal-scoring isn't necessarily even on Matthews' mind. He would much rather win a championship than score 70 goals per season.
I think not accomplishing the team goal, you're still left with the same feeling, regardless of if you score a hundred goals or if you score 20, you know what I mean. Like, you're just in the same spot of emotions and feeling like you didn't accomplish what you really set out to accomplish.
While that is nice to hear, if you aren't scoring and you're not winning, then you're just posturing, which is the issue the Leafs have right now.
Their next two games are against the Buffalo Sabres, and this is the perfect opportunity for the Maple Leafs to change the narrative of the season.
It's not going to be easy, but Auston Matthews needs to be better, and he has to make that change sooner rather than later.
