Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has been making some eye-opening statements to the media as of late, and it only looks good for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Connor McDavid is going to be a free agent in 2026, unless he first signs a new contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
However, McDavid has yet to do that, and with the NHL season set to begin in about five weeks, it feels as though the forward will start the season without a deal.
This has led to a ton of anxiety amongst Oilers fans and for very good reason. McDavid is one of the best players of all time, and losing him would be a disaster.
Connor McDavid setting up for a massive free agency cycle
During a recent scrum with reporters, McDavid was asked about his contract status and why he has decided to take his sweet time.
This led to a fascinating answer in which he noted that he only has one shot to get his career right, and he does not want to make the wrong decision.
I've put everything I have into my career. You only get one chance to do it and to do it right. And that leads to taking your time with it.
If you're the Oilers, you can't help but feel as though this means McDavid is leaving. Sure, he wants to win this year, but the team needs to prove to him that they can, first.
As for Toronto Maple Leafs fans, this is exactly what they want to hear. The Leafs were McDavid's childhood team, and they are a superstar away from being a Cup team.
Playing with someone like Auston Matthews would be exciting for McDavid, and the team has the salary cap to sign him.
Of course, we must wait and see what the future holds before jumping to conclusions. For now, there is still a world in which McDavid simply goes back to Edmonton, this ruining free agency for everyone.
