Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid has yet to sign a new deal with the team, and according to Frank Seravalli, things are about to get very dire.
Just a few weeks ago, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that McDavid would sign a contract before the start of the NHL.
Unfortunately, for the Oilers, things have taken a drastic turn. According to Frank Seravalli, McDavid's commitment is no longer a guarantee.

During an appearance on Bleacher Report 'Open Ice,' Seravalli made it crystal clear that McDavid is unlikely to sign a new deal before the season starts.
While this may become a distraction, McDavid wants to make sure the Oilers are serious about winning before he commits more years of his life to the franchise.
This is bad news for the Oilers, who have some serious holes to fill, especially when it comes to their goaltending, which is lackluster to say the least.
As for the Toronto Maple Leafs, they benefit greatly from all of this, as the Leafs are expected to be a top target for McDavid should he explore free agency.
In our view, the start of the season is a point of no return. If McDavid doesn't sign during training camp, he won't sign at all during the season.
At the end of the day, legacy is about winning, and if McDavid finishes his career without a Cup, he will have retired as a lesser player.
