Auston Matthews Breaks his Silence After What Could Have Been a Life-Threatening Injury

Auston Matthews has been great this season and with the playoffs three weeks away, fans are very eager to see how things play out.

The team still has eight games left to play this season and right now, the goal is to get the Atlantic Division title which will be tough to do with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers as competition.

Regardless, the Maple Leafs are playing some spirited hockey right now and fans are very excited to see this carry into the postseason.

Unfortunately, the season could have taken a very grim turn on Sunday night in Anaheim as the skate of Cutter Gauthier almost clipped Matthews in the neck.

This could have led to a fatal or critical injury and it has led to discourse about neck protection and whether or not the NHL needs to step in and make it mandatory.

While speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Matthews talked about the incident, noting that it all happened so fast, he had no time to react.

Only time will tell whether or not the NHL actually takes action to make neck protection mandatory. For now, it seems like at most, it will get grandfathered in.

We just want the players to be safe and these kinds of safety measures would go a very long way in ensuring that many of these players remain secure on the ice.

Tomorrow, Auston Matthews will be focusing on the Florida Panthers as the Leafs play their Atlantic Division rival in what could be the biggest game of the season so far.
