Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is great friends with Mitch Marner, so it should come as no surprise that free agency is bumming the forward out.
Auston Matthews is easily one of the most beloved players in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise.
Meanwhile, Mitch Marner is probably one of the most criticized players in the history of the Leafs franchise. However, they are both superstars, and any team would love to have them both.
Unfortunately, for the Leafs, they are on the verge of losing Marner in free agency. While nothing is guaranteed, it feels like we are going down that path.

While speaking to the media this week, Matthews spoke about Marner and the possibility of losing a great friend and teammate to another team.
It was an emotional statement that some Maple Leafs fans might just classify as completely heartbreaking, all things considered.
He's a brother, he's such a good teammate and friend. We're extremely close. He's extremely close with a lot of guys on the team. He's a big part of our team and has been a big part of our team for a long time. Unfortunately, that's the nature of the business. People come and go, and he has the right to make his own decision, but we all love him very much, and like I said, he's an amazing person and teammate
Only time will tell whether or not Marner decides to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the long haul.
Given the lack of playoff success, one could make the argument that it would be best for both sides to just break up and start fresh.
However, there are plenty of Maple Leafs fans out there who are going to be especially disappointed if Marner does, indeed, walk.
Free agency officially begins on July 1st and it is going to be interesting to see what General Manager Brad Treliving is able to accomplish.
