Mitch Marner's Agent Drops Bombshell Statement Weeks Before Free Agency

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is in the market for a new contract, and his agent Darren Ferris is speaking out weeks ahead of free agency.
Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs seem to be in the midst of a rocky marriage right now, and with free agency on the horizon, a divorce could be imminent.
Overall, it doesn't feel as though Marner would like to stay. All of the reports suggest that he is out of here and that it is only a matter of time before he signs somewhere else.
However, some fans simply believe that this is an example of agent Darren Ferris playing dirty negotiating tricks. After all, he has pulled stunts like this before.

With speculation running rampant, Ferris decided to issue a public statement to The New York Times. It was here that he revealed what the plan is.
Essentially, Ferris and Marner want to keep this process quiet. There won't be any negotiations done in public. The only real update will come when Marner has a deal signed.
"With the season concluded, there's naturally going to be speculation about what's next. At this time, we're not in a position to share any updates regarding future plans. These are private matters, and when there's something definitive to communicate, we'll do so through the proper channels. Until then, we appreciate your understanding and respect for the process."
Whether or not that deal is signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs feels unlikely at this point.
There are plenty of bad teams out there willing to overpay him because he had 100 points this past season. It won't be because of his playoff output.
If the Leafs do end up losing Mitch Marner for nothing, it will sting for a bit. That said, it might just be for the best.
Only time will tell how this all ends and whether or not Marner will still be a Leaf at the end of it all.
