Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews finished with a goal last night but he almost had two as he attempted the infamous "Michigan" against the Lightning.
Auston Matthews has been on a tear as of late with five goals in his last four games.
Auston Matthews almost had the Maple Leafs goal of the season
Last night, Matthews actually attempted the infamous "Michigan" which is also known as a Lacross goal.
Unfortunately, the captain was stymied by
Jonas Johansson who did a great job of covering up the upper left side of the net.
After the game, Matthews spoke about the play and explained why he felt like attempting the "Michigan" was necessary in that situation.
«I didn't see any other option. The puck was rolling. It was the beginning of the period, so the tape was fresh. I almost had it. I kinda quit attempting those couple years ago, but I just thought that was a reasonable attempt and had a pretty good opportunity.»
Had Matthews scored on this play, it would have been on highlight reels for months and perhaps even years.
Instead, the captain will just have to move on and maybe try it again whenever the opportunity presents itself.
As for the Leafs, they are currently on a three-game winning streak that has allowed them to increase their Atlantic Division lead.
The team appears to be different under Craig Berube and there is a lot of optimism that a deep playoff run is a real possibility.
