Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews took a pretty bad high stick to the eye from Aleksander Barkov, and the immediate aftermath turned out to be pretty gnarly.
Auston Matthews scored a goal last night that turned out to be the game-winner in Game 6 against the Florida Panthers. The Leafs had their backs against the wall, and they delivered.
It was a brutal play and the captain even had to go back to the locker room to get checked out. This could have been disastrous but instead, the Leafs were able to prevail.
Auston Matthews talks Aleksander Barkov high stick
After the game, Matthews was asked about Barkov and the high stick that went unpenalized by the officials during the game.
As the captain explained, it was a pretty scary moment for him as he actually lost his eye-sight for a brief period of time, which forced him to leave the game.
Auston Matthews says the Barkov high stick temporarily impaired his vision but assures he's fine now.
Thankfully, his eyesight came back and he was able to get that game-winning goal in the third period.
Now, Matthews and the Leafs must prepare for Game 7 which is set to take place on Sunday in Toronto. The Leafs have not won a Game 7 in the Matthews era.
If they do, however, they will get to play against the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Finals, which would be a very fun series.
Only time will tell whether or not this Leafs team truly has what it takes to live up to the moment and prove all of their doubters wrong.
