Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving had a quiet first day of free agency on Tuesday, and now, it seems like he is acknowledging a shift is necessary.
Brad Treliving was one of the general managers under the most scrutiny on Tuesday, as it is clear that the
Maple Leafs have to make some moves in order to get better.
Brad Treliving speaks on free agency
While speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, Treliving admitted that there weren't many guys available. The market has already thinned out, and it is making things difficult for the front office.
However, the strategy shift is apparent. In order to acquire a top-six forward, the Leafs are going to have to make some trades.
Brad Treliving says the free agent pool is looking «thinner and thinner» when it comes to replace the hole at the top six spot with Marner out. Sounds like having cap space and the possibility of a trade down the road may be the play for them.
Furthermore, this would solve some of their problems when it comes to the center position. Although, as it stands, the team still needs to improve on the wing.
Overall, pursuing trades will not be easy for the Leafs, especially when you consider their current lack of assets. However, you have to admire Treliving for trying.
These next few days and weeks should be fascinating as the franchise attempts to improve the roster and get closer to another Atlantic Division win.
