Brad Treliving Speaks Out on Auston Matthews' Sharp Decline in production.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews hasn't been scoring at the same clip he usually does and Brad Treliving had something to say about it today.
Last season, Auston Matthews was just one goal away from reaching 70 goals which would have been a truly amazing achievement.
Although he didn't do it, he still had an amazing year with over 100 points. Unfortunately, during the 2024-25 season, Matthews has not had the same success.
Overall, a lot of this has stemmed from his nagging injury. However, in 67 games, he still managed an elite 33 goals and 78 points which definitely isn't bad.
In fact, had he played all 82 games, he would have been on pace for 40 goals and 95 assists which is phenomenal and should be applauded.
Auston Matthews defended by Brad Treliving
Today, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving spoke to the media and Matthews' production was brought up. It was here where he defended the captain.
In fact, Treliving believes this is the best version of Matthews he has ever seen. Those are strong words but it is hard to disagree.
"We can say, okay, his goal scoring may be down. I think his overall game is as good as I've ever seen it ... how we have to check & play 200 feet, he's set the standard for us."
A more defensive Matthews will do wonders come playoff time as this team looks to prove that it is a real and true contender.
For years, the Leafs have disappointed by now, they have a real opportunity to go on a potential Stanley Cup run. That would be simply massive.
If they do go on a Cup run, it will have to be because of the way Matthews plays on both ends of the ice. We cannot wait to see what he does.
