Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Brandon Carlo has been paired with Morgan Rielly, a player who has largely struggled for the team so far this season.
When the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Brandon Carlo from the Boston Bruins at the trade deadline, it was clear that the goal was to play the right-handed defenseman with Morgan Rielly.
With their assistant captain struggling, the thought was that Carlo could help him get his mojo back and be an anchoring force on the Maple Leafs blue line.
For the most part, the former Bruin has been solid with the Maple Leafs, even if Rielly has continued to struggle more than fans anticipated.

In fact, throughout the season, Rielly has becoming the Maple Leafs whipping boy, with some even suggesting that he should be sat down for a game or two.
Carlo, on the other hand, absolutely loves the guy and while speaking to reporters, he had nothing but great things to say about Mo.

His ability to move the puck makes me feel really comfortable in the defensive zone-getting it over to him, knowing we'll be able to make some good plays coming out of the D-zone. He's been doing a great job communicating with me as well. Defensively, on rush reads, I'm really beginning to recognize his voice, along with mine. It's been great. For me, it's an ideal partnership with a guy like that.

If you're a Leafs fan, these comments are going to come as a bit of a surprise given everything we have seen out of Morgan Rielly this season.
However, Brandon Carlo is the professional so you have no choice but to listen to him and accept what he is saying at face value.
We want to see Rielly succeed and play well, so perhaps these comments will inspired him to be better knowing his guys have his back.
