The Toronto Maple Leafs are trying to acquire Jonathan Toews in free agency, but there is one Canadian team trying to stand in the way.
Jonathan Toews is ready to make his NHL comeback, and as a result, numerous teams are trying to acquire him.
One of those teams is the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are trying to make a big splash this summer following an embarrassing playoff exit at the hands of the Florida Panthers.
Overall, the Toews pursuit is going to be a lot of fun, especially with the Leafs supposedly being a frontrunner to get the star player.

However, according to Adam Proteau of The Hockey News, the Winnipeg Jets actually have a better shot at acquiring the star player.
Winnipeg's excellent depth also means Toews could come in and serve as the Jets' third-or-fourth-line center, and the ensuing lack of pressure to play big minutes right away and start putting up major points may also be a determinant in his decision on where to resume playing. And the chance to play perhaps one final season with a team that has a solid shot at winning a Stanley Cup for the three-time Cup-winner might be its best selling point for him.
Of course, Toews is quite literally from Winnipeg, which means he would feel pretty at home playing for that club.
FanDuel Sportsbook has the Jets as the odds on favorites to acquire the forward right now. However, the Leafs are a close second.
Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs can be the team to play spoiler come July 1st.
