Ottawa Senators forward Claude Giroux was just sent home by the Toronto Maple Leafs, however, he could be joining the legendary club in free agency.
Claude Giroux is a beloved NHL veteran with over 1200 games of experience and over 1100 points. His most recent season, he played for the Ottawa Senators and had 50 points in 81 games.
At 37 years old, he could still be a solid player for a team that needs him and going into free agency, there are some teams who are interested.
Unsurprisingly, the Toronto Maple Leafs would be one of those teams as they need experience and a contingency plan in case
Mitch Marner walks.
Claude Giroux to the Toronto Maple Leafs?
According to Bleacher Report, there are four teams that are actually being linked to Giroux right now, and two of them are Canadian.
The first of those teams is the Philadelphia Flyers, who would love a reunion with Giroux prior to his eventual retirement.
Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens are also interested, as are the Dallas Stars. Lastly, the Toronto Maple Leafs are seemingly looking to make a play.
If the Leafs sign Giroux, it will certainly be for less than the $6.5 million he is currently making with the Senators.
However, he is a low-risk bet and he would love to play for a contender like the Leafs near the end of his career.
Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs actually do consider signing Giroux or if they go in another direction entirely.
