Ex-Toronto Maple Leafs forward Derek King has found himself with an incredible new job as the Washington Capitals organization made him a head coach.
While Derek King only played around two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he certainly left his mark on the franchise as a guy who could give you over 20 goals per season.
Over the last few years, King has been rising the ranks of the coaching world, with his latest job being an assistant with the Chicago Blackhawks.
It was becoming clear that something greater was on the horizon for King, and on Monday, his fate was sealed thanks to the Washington Capitals.
Derek King promoted to head coach
It was reported first by
Inside AHL Hockey that King was being given the head coaching job with the Hershey Bears, the biggest job of his career.
The Hershey Bears are a legendary AHL franchise, and now, he has a direct line to the Washington Capitals, which puts him in a nice spot.
While it could take a while before he gets back to the NHL ranks, this head coaching job will be a phenomenal opportunity and audition of sorts.
If you are a fan of the Capitals and you like the Hershey Bears, this is probably big news. For Leafs fans, this is another example of the team's alumni doing big things.
Only time will tell whether or not King continues to be successful in the coaching world. We hope he is able to prove himself.
Meanwhile, the Leafs are very happy with their coaching situation, as Craig Berube continues to do great work.
We wish King the best of luck with his new gig.
