Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the NHL, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping he stays on the team for the rest of his career.
Mitch Marner recently left the Toronto Maple Leafs, which brought forth the end of an era that fans have mixed feelings towards.
The team made the playoffs every single season, but they also never made it past the second round. Of course, fans wanted more, and Marner was not able to give it to them.
However, the focus is now on Captain Auston Matthews, whose contract will expire in a few years. While fans hope to see him in a Leafs jersey for years, there is always a chance he moves on.
Auston Matthews could leave the Toronto Maple Leafs
In fact, in a new report from Nick Kypreos, it was stated that Matthews might just re-evaluate his standing with the Leafs if things don't go in the right direction next season.
While Kypreos doesn't know anything for sure, he certainly understands the mindset of a player, and how they may switch up if a Stanley Cup isn't possible.
Is he keeping his options open? If next season doesn't trend in the right direction for the captain and his team, will he want stick around?
Overall, it is still a long way away before Matthews actually makes such a drastic decision. But the fact remains, anything can happen.
If Matthews were to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs, it would be an absolute disaster, and the fans here may never forgive him for it.
The only way fans would accept it is if he were to win the Stanley Cup before the end of his next contract.
While that isn't completely impossible, it would still be extremely difficult. Only time will tell whether or not Auston can get it done.
