The debate over income tax advantages in the NHL has resurfaced and Gary Bettman is downplaying their impact on team success.

Gary Bettman argued that factors like cost of living, quality of life and the salary cap are bigger than tax differences and he is pointing to historical Stanley Cup wins by California teams like Anaheim in 2007, Los Angeles in 2012 and 2014 as evidence.

Critics have responded to Gary Bettman and his statement on the tax advantages

However, critics note these examples are not actual anymore and that teams in low-tax states like Florida, Nevada and Tennessee have consistently succeed to keep their talent and managing their cap space.
The Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers show this advantage by signing superstars like Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point and Matthew Tkachuk with below salary than the same type of player in the league.
On the other hand, high-tax markets like Toronto pay premiums to retain stars like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner who have contracts exceeding $12 million annually.
These disparities show the financial flexibility available to teams in low-tax regions like Florida, and this is allowing them to build deeper rosters under the salary cap since they don't have to pay their superstar the same amount as Canadian teams.
Bettman maintains the league's system ensures parity and is citing some preliminary analyses.
However, the recent success stories like the Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars suggest otherwise since these teams consistently contend because they are navigating the cap more effectively due to favorable tax conditions.
While Bettman dismisses the need for changes, the issue remains and teams in high-tax markets face challenges in attracting and retaining talent.
As teams in tax-free states continue to thrive, the NHL may eventually face pressure to address these disparities to ensure true parity across the NHL.
