Rory McIlroy is currently in Canada for a golf tournament, and upon meeting MLSE CEO Keith Pelley, he opted to make an unfortunate joke about the Toronto Maple Leafs.
When it comes to
Toronto Maple Leafs fans, there is no doubt that there has been a whole lot of suffering to go around.
The team has not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, which means the drought is almost 60 years old. Overall, this has left a lot of fans wondering whether or not the team is actually cursed.
An athlete who can actually empathize with this is Rory McIlroy, who has choked away more than a couple of Masters titles during his time on the PGA Tour.
Rory McIlroy Roasts the Toronto Maple Leafs
Pelley presented McIlroy with a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, which prompted him to make a joke that is going to make a lot of fans roll their eyes in agony.
If I can win the Masters, then the Leafs can win the Stanley Cup
McIlroy does make a good point. While he might be trying to instill hope in the team, we believe the opposite effect has happened. Instead, fans are just reminded of how badly the Leafs continue to underperform.
This year should have been truly different for the Leafs, but it wasn't. Instead, we got the same old tired results that fans are sick and tired of.
Only time will tell whether or not McIlroy's comments come to fruition, and the Leafs finally end the drought that has plagued them for over half a century.
