Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner remains one of the best players in the NHL, and as a result, he can make some hefty demands during free agency.
Mitch Marner is going to be the most popular man in the NHL this offseason, especially with free agency coming up on July 1st.
The Leafs are the only team that can offer him an eight-year deal. Other teams can only offer seven. Of course,
the Leafs could do a sign-and-trade, which would allow the forward to enjoy an eight-year deal elsewhere.
Either way, this has been something for Marner to think about. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the forward doesn't actually care about the eighth year.
At the end of the day, he wants to explore free agency, and he has no interest in a sign-and-trade. It's bad news for the Leafs, but they probably already knew this.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period talking with Jeff Marek on The Sheet says he doesn't believe the 8th year is important to Mitch Marner, he believes Marner is going to July 1 no matter what, doesn't see a sign-and-trade scenario happening.
Whether or not Mitch Marner gets what he wants on the open market, still remains to be seen. There are rumblings that teams will refuse to give him more than
Mikko Rantanen.
Overall, this is a big summer for Mitch, and if other teams aren't paying up, then he may just realize he's better off staying with Toronto, which he has yet to rule out.
It is still the first week of June, which means Marner has a lot of time left to make a decision and make his feelings known.
A this rate, fans would just love to get this all over with. But first, they must wait until the Stanley Cup Finals are over. Game 1 goes down tonight.
