Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is going to be looking for a new contract this summer, and one analyst believes free agency might bring forth the unexpected.
Mitch Marner is going to be a popular man over the next few weeks as numerous NHL teams will be fielding offers his way. Some say he's only worth $12 million per season, while others think he is worth $15 million.
Would Mitch Marner sign with the Montreal Canadiens?
Those teams are the Montreal Canadiens and the Calgary Flames. According to David Pagnotta, both teams have a realistic shot of at least fielding an offer.
Would Marner actually accept a deal from these two teams? That is very unlikely at this stage. The top of his list includes the Los Angeles Kings, Florida Panthers, and the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
I think Calgary will express interest, I think the Montreal Canadiens will express interest, whether those are environments he wants to go in and be a part of, I don't get that sense
Regardless, we could have a very interesting free agency battle heating up. While Marner could still return to the Leafs, it feels like half the league is trying to sign him.
He just came off a season in which he had 102 points, including 75 assists. With that in mind, it makes sense that teams around the NHL would be interested.
Of all of the players in free agency this season, Mitch Marner is easily the best one available. It is going to be fascinating to see what happens next.
Hopefully, the Leafs and Marner can work things out. However, if they don't, we're sure Leafs fans agree that the worst-case scenario would be him playing for the Montreal Canadiens.
