Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is drumming up a ton of rumors this offseason, and with free agency on the way, 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast claims to have a scoop.
The
Mitch Marner situation is one that fans are paying attention to, and we don't just mean Maple Leafs fans. We mean fans around the league.
A new viral tweet from the '2 Mutts Hockey Podcast' claims to know the answer to that question.
Is Mitch Marner leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs?
They claim the reason behind the move is the supposed lack of respect involving a proposed trade for
Mikko Rantanen.
Marner was open to resigning with the @MapleLeafs on an 8 year deal after the playoffs were done but he changed his mind after the trade deadline when the Management Staff asked him if he was interested in going to the @Canes for Mikko Rantanen, Marner felt a lack of respect, trust & belief was gone at that point.
With him having welcoming a new member to his family a trade out of Toronto wasn't something he expected from the organization at that time. He believed that this never should have brought to his attention as he's always wanted to stay but he wanted to get through the season first.
The podcast went on to say that Marner was willing to stay in Toronto, but the trade deadline stuff really got to him.
It sounds like if there was a change in the Management Staff after the season Marner would be welling to stay & sign a team friendly deal on an 8 year term. Marner wasn't expecting any changes but if there was any he would stay. The hope was to make it to the @StanleyCup Final at the start of the season & as the playoffs went on the belief was still strong on that happening.
Marner loves the City, The Coaches, the fans, his teammates & is all in on seeing this through but with what was presented to him at the Trade Deadline it would be hard to make this all work with all parties staying put. It was something Marner & his family had a tough time getting over.
They concluded their report noting that Marner was up front with the organization when the season began, and he believes he was betrayed.
Marner felt he was upfront & honest with his situation at the start of the season. In no way was a trade something he could imagine.
It's unfortunate that this sounds like the end for Marner as a Leaf. It's really sad it all ends this way. He should go down as the Greatest Leaf born in Toronto.
If you check the replies to the tweet, most don't buy this report for a second. Firstly, the source of the report is a bit dubious. Secondly, it reads like a statement from Marner's PR team.
Once Elliotte Friedman or Darren Dreger reports it, then we know it is actually confirmed.
