Mitch Marner ultimately chose the Las Vegas Golden Knights; however, had he gone to market, there were some teams hoping to take full advantage in free agency.
It was becoming clearer and clearer to everyone involved that the superstar winger wanted to go to the Golden Knights and that he would stop at nothing to make it happen.
The Carolina Hurricanes wanted Mitch Marner
Whatever the case may be, there were a ton of teams that ended up getting the short end of the stick on this one. The Carolina Hurricanes, in particular, were one of many teams hoping to acquire Marner.
In the end, they were not able to make an offer. However,
according to Chris Johnston, the Hurricanes were planning on offering a lot more than the $12 million per season the Golden Knights settled on.
"I don't know what the number would've been for them but it would've been bigger than 12x8, I'm sure of that
It's interesting to see how other teams operate and how they evaluate different talents. Having said that, it makes sense that they would want to spend big bucks on Marner.
He is a player who has accomplished quite a bit in the regular season, and he would have been a great alternative to
Mikko Rantanen.
In the end, the Hurricanes came out just fine as they were able to get themselves
Nikolaj Ehlers from the Winnipeg Jets.
Only time will tell whether or not this trade works out for both sides, or ends up looking like a tremendous flop.
